Hundreds Compete in Speed Skating Meet
Over 100 people competed in the annual Rochester Short Track Meet this weekend.
The Rochester Speed Skating Team hosted the speed skating competition at the Ice Center on MCC's campus. There are skaters from 8 different states and Canada.
The ages of the skaters range from four years old to the master's 50 years or older group.
Ron Dusharme, 78, has been skating for the last five years and says it's great for any age.
"It's a sport for anybody, men and women, boys and girls, anybody can try it," said Dusharme.
Meet director Melody Burdekin said the sport also encourages skaters to reach their personal best.
"It is an individual sport so you're never relying on a team mate. It's only you out there trying to beat your own times so it really gives you the motivation to keep at it," Burdekin said.
About 60 of the skaters are from Rochester. This meet will determine which skaters will qualify for an upcoming competition in Ohio.
