A local band leader is fighting for his life after being hit by a car on Sunday.

Len Hawley is locally known for his entertainment and time spent volunteering his time in the community.

In his early years, he was known for being the orchestral leader conducting musicians from the Eastman School of music. Most recently, he dedicates his time playing for seniors and the sick in nursing homes.

Family members say they are overwhelmed with the support the community is showing towards Len's recovery.

"Just to hear that people are acknowledging the respect factor of returning that gracious statement or towards making sure he's okay, it has been beautiful witnessing it," said John DiLullo, Hawley's grandson.

Hawley was hit after leaving a party where he performed late Saturday night.
