There will be a new housing facility and treatment center at the Canandaigua VA Medical Center.

Senator Schumer joined stakeholders Friday to celebrate the groundbreaking. The Cadence Square Project will provide homeless veterans with a home and care, specializing in treatment of veterans with substance abuse and mental illnesses.

Schumer discussed the need for the project based on recent statistics from a federal report.

"Today, we must remain on the front lines of treatment, and stand with our vets as they confront what may be the biggest fight of their lives. A fight many of them share. A recent federal report showed 27% of Iraq War vets who recently returned home either had signs of PTSD or substance abuse," Schumer said.

Construction began earlier this month, and is expected to open in October of 2013.
