Fines for tickets increased Thursday but some residents say higher penalties won't fix the problem.

It's a decision some of us run into quite often and we weigh our options.

"Oh I'll just be two seconds I just have to run in and drop off this piece of paper that needs to be dropped off, or notarized," explained Paula Cummings of Irondequoit.

Some residents say parking in the city, especially during weekday hours, isn't always easy. But now, those two minutes in the wrong spot, is going to hit your wallet, hard.

"The fees are exorbitant, they really are. I mean with how much we are already paying in taxes," says Cummings.

Most fines will increase ten dollars, except for illegally parking in a handicapped space and parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant. Fees for those violations are up by thirty dollars.

The hike was included in the City's fiscal year 2012-13 budget, and carries an anticipated $1.7 million dollars in new revenue. Daily rates for some parking garages also increased from $6.75 to $8.

This is the first parking ticket increase in more than ten years, but some people say that upping the penalty won't change the fact that there isn't a lot of street side parking available during the week.

Some residents say drop off zones and short-term parking could help alleviate the parking issue in the downtown area.
