Monroe County issued a mandatory evacuation for people living in homes located along the Lake Ontario shoreline Monday night.
The areas affected included the towns Webster, Greece, even portions of Rochester, Irondequoit and other towns along the lake. The Red Cross says the evacuation affected several thousand people.
Monroe County activated this mandatory evacuation because of the threat for residents living in low-lying areas along the shoreline. The county didn't want people in harm's way of this unpredictable storm.
Rough water out on the lake meant the shoreline was taking a beating putting homes at risk.
Public safety personnel went door-to-door and also called residents letting them know that alternate shelter was available to them. The county opened six shelter locations in various towns including Brockport, Webster and Greece.
Monday night just a handful of people showed up at those locations for assistance.
The Red Cross says some stayed put at home and many who left their homes stayed with family and friends. Some of those evacuated, left behind homes with flooded basements. The county encouraged but did not force residents to go to the shelters for safety.
"What we do have is folks coming in is a safe place for that we are offering shelter so folks can stay in here overnight and have a safe place as well as the room we are in now for our night owls who want to stay up and see what is going on," said Bernadette Bowie. "So its a safe place for families to come to be safe."
The shelters have the basics: food and any medical care, even a doctor on duty 24 hours.
The Red Cross says there is also mental health care people available anytime you are encouraged to leave your home and not sure what's ahead.
At this point we don't know how long the shelters will be open.
We will be out and checking storm damage around the area and will have updates throughout the day.
