Millions of people will be hitting the road, or taking to the skies as Wednesday is the busiest travel day of the year.

Wednesday is typically the busiest travel day of the year, however you wouldn't know it by the low number of people flying out of the Greater Rochester International Airport around 8 a.m. Wednesday.

According to AAA, more than 43 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles or more this Thanksgiving holiday, however only three million of them by air.

Air travel is down nearly two percent from last Thanksgiving. University of Rochester freshman Amanda Allen was on her way to Richmond, Virginia for her Thanksgiving dinner.

"I'm really excited. I haven't seen any of my family in a couple of months so I'm excited to go see them. I haven't seen my aunt and uncle in a couple of years so it will be really good to see them again," Allen said.

Andy Welkley and his two daughters were heading home to South Carolina after an early Thanksgiving with family in Fairport. He says celebrating early helped avoid the holiday rush.

"We thought we'd be able to come in on the weekend, get out a little bit early and make it as easy as possible traveling with these guys."

The early Thanksgiving in Fairport turned out to be a bonus for Andy and his girls. They have another turkey dinner planned for tomorrow after returning home to Charleston, South Carolina.
