Brenda Cline is from Addison, NY. She comes up to Rochester every Black Friday to shop. Thanksgiving actually can kind of get in the way, so Cline celebrates the holiday on Wednesday.
"It doesn't matter whether it's Wednesday night or Thursday. We get together as a family," explained Cline. "Thursday morning we come up to Rochester, go out to eat, get a hotel room and spend the weekend here and go shopping. We started out at 7:30 last night."
For friends Sam Train and Andrea Spitale from Greece, shopping on Black Friday has become a tradition. The two were at the Mall at Greece Ridge at 6 am.
"We went to Eastview, we went to Marketplace and now we're here. We're here for the big opening of JC Penney's. We were the first ones in, " they said.
"I'm just the Energizer bunny. What can I say? I just keep going and going," said Spitale.
It's that kind of energy retailers want to see and actually rely on for Black Friday. The National Retail Federation estimates 147 million people will shop from Friday to Sunday. Retailers count on those numbers because holiday season shopping can help make a third of their annual sales.
"I actually went around to visit quite a few of the tenants and they're very positive on what the numbers were and in those first four hours, they really did well," said Jim Hofford, Mall at Greece Ridge General Manager.
While she hadn't finished all her Christmas shopping, Cline said her day was a success. She heads back home, Saturday.
"We'll shop on the way home."
