For the eighth year in a row, hundreds of runners met at Mendon Ponds Park to remember one of their own.
The annual Run for Carl is in memory of Carl Metzler, a former Pittsford Sutherland High School athlete who passed away in 2004 at the age of 22. What began is a small group of friends getting together to remember Carl, now attracts more than 200 runners.
"The first year was actually on Carl's birthday the year after he passed away," said organizer Lindsey Kunath. "It was supposed to be just a bunch of friends getting together to remember him in the park we grew up running in and it's grown into really a tradition for the entire town. All the runners and skier show up year after year, this is the eighth year, it's pretty great."
Carl participated in track, cross-country and nordic skiing in high school. Many participating in Carl's run are his friends and former teammates.
"You remember all the times like after practice or during practice," said Dan Keely. "Carl was a lot faster than I was but it brings you back to that time in high school where we'd all start here or down on the lake, all start out running together, the same path. It definitely brings back a lot of memories."
This is a run where it doesn't matter who finishes first. People came out to remember Carl and help raise some funds for worthy causes.
There is no entry fee, however donations are accepted for the Carl Metzler Memorial Fund. Some of the money raised is directed toward Arrythmogenic Right Ventricular Dysplasia, or ARVD, the disease that claimed Carl's life.
"The research is going on at Johns Hopkins to try and find a cure, there's no cure yet," said Pam Metzler. "So that money goes there to help support those efforts because it's a pretty rare disease that doesn't get a lot of publicity."
More than $24,000 has been raised in Carl's memory. Besides ARVR research, 54 scholarships have been awarded in to runners and skiers at Pittsford Sutherland and Mendon High Schools.
