The Holiday season officially kicked off in Rochester as Mayor Richards switched on the lights of the Liberty Pole Saturday night.

A crowd of people gathered to watch the lighting of the Liberty Pole for the "Light Up the Holidays" event Saturday evening.

More festivities followed, including a parade down to Manhattan Square Park where the city offered free ice skating, carriage rides and fireworks.

"We wanted to come down and see the Liberty Pole lit up for Christmas," said Gene Clifford.

"I've never seen it lit up in person before, like on the day that it happens. So this will be my first time seeing it," said Mariah Sweet.

"Well it's good for the community and family also, you know. A lot of them dont get chances to spend time together until the holidays with work and school," said Shundrelle Black.

Mayor Richards says the city will host New Year's Eve celebrations along East Main Street later this month.
