Malik Evans has retained his position as Rochester City School District school board president. The board Wednesday evening then voted in member Van White as the new vice president.
White says his goal is to reduce the number of schools under what the state designates as "priority schools."
"So in other words, next year at this time I believe we'll have fewer schools under supervision. Fewer 'priority schools', fewer 'focus schools' and more 'reward schools.' Those are the good schools and I think this district, with this leadership, can produce some meaningful results where people get some hope," White said.
"This is a very critical year. We're going to have another challenging budget situation. We're dealing with the facilities master plan, an ever-changing requirement from the state, so we need to be able to see how we can ramp up our academic achievement," said Evans.
Evans said a balanced and stable budget to maintain central services for students will also be important.
