Senator Chuck Schumer wants some of the country's major retailers to stop selling assault rifles in the wake of recent violence.

Schumer made the plea Sunday, saying the sales of the assault weapons have already skyrocketed since the Newtown massacre nearly a month ago.

He says businesses need to halt sales on their own until Washington can make changes to current legislation.

"I'm urging our country's major gun retailers, like Walmart and Sports Authority, to suspend sales of modern assault-style weapons until Congress is able to fully consider and vote on legislation to curb gun violence," said Senator Chuck Schumer.

Schumer said he fears sales may climb even higher during an upcoming "Gun Appreciation Day" organized by pro-gun activists.
