One of two Catholic churches in a Batavia parish held its last mass on Sunday.
St. Anthony's Parish Family is more than 100 years old.
It's Liberty Street church was built in the 1950's.
The group of Buffalo Diocese members recommended closing Saint Anthony's Church on Liberty Street in Batavia as of January 1st.
Saint Anthony's merged with Sacred Heart Church on Sumner Street to become the new Ascension Parish back in 2008, according to the diocese.
"Even though I believe there are good reasons after we study these situations to make these hard decisions, I know it's a terribly difficult, sad, grieving thing and I know why some people get angry about it too," said Bishop Malone.
Committee members said a dwindling congregation at Saint Anthony's made it tough to pay church expenses.
