A fundraising event Friday night challenged Rochester residents to spend four hours in the cold to raise awareness for neglected animals.
The PAWsome Winter Challenge asks participants to help raise money as well as awareness.
PAWS, which stands for Providing Animal Welfare Services, is less than a year old. They strive to protect animals and assist pet owners to care properly for their animals.
Initially, the goal was to reach $5,000 by January 31st. They've already raised $20,000. The money will be put towards insulated bedding, food, hay and other supplies for Rochester animals.
"This event was actually the idea of a 10-year-old, my step-daughter," said Christy Neu, Event Coordinator for PAWS. "And she said, 'how can we really help the community understand the importance of animal welfare?'"
By creating awareness, they hope to protect the welfare of animals kept outside regularly, especially in the winter.
PAWS is already looking forward to having the challenge again next year.
