The Pope's resignation means that the Rochester Catholic Diocese, with more than 300,000 Catholics and 100 parishes will likely be waiting longer on who its new bishop will be. Bishop Cunningham of Syracuse is serving as Apostolic Administrator for for now.

For parishioners at Rochester's Sacred Heart Cathedral, prayers for Pope Benedict and also concern about what's next for the Rochester Catholic Diocese.

"That job has got to be very difficult. We hope he has a good replacement; we are waiting for our own bishop," said Ruth Spaziano.

Rochester's Bishop Matthew Clark resigned in September. The diocese says the Congregation of Bishops identify candidates to be the new Bishop in Rochester. The Pope makes the final appointment.

Sacred Heart's Father Kevin McKenna says now that Pope Benedict is resigning, Rochester will likely have to wait.

"This could possibly slow down the process even more, but we don't know. We don't know where the process is right now but I suspect it is going to slow it down somewhat," McKenna said.

We have had the papacy with us for centuries and that the church continues on and it gives us encouragement that it will continue on and we will have leadership and the lord will be with us and walk with us in this journey."

Bishop Robert Cunnigham of Syracuse is serving as Apostolic Administrator of the 12-county Diocese of Rochester until a Bishop is named.

"I do not think there will be new ideas. The teaching of the church is timeless, it is eternal," Cunningham said.

Father McKenna said the community should keep the Pope, his successor, and Rochester's future Catholic leader in prayer.
