Workshop Teaches Warning Signs of Workplace Violence

The Department of Homeland Security says workplace violence is the second leading cause of job related deaths in the United States. It costs American businesses nearly $36 billion a year.
The Rochester Business Alliance teamed up with the Homeland Security Institute at Monroe Community College to offer a program to help curb workplace violence. The workshop teaches supervisors and employers how to deal with on the job violence and early recognition of issues that may lead to that type of situation.
Many believe that a violent individual just snaps and goes on a rampage. Experts say that usually is not the case.
"Eighty-five percent of the time there's actually some sort of indicator down the line this individual may go off. What we're doing here in this class is showing behavioral cues, characteristics of people that may go off and how to interact with them before they do go off," said Guy Rossi, MCC Homeland Security Institute.
Guy Rossi says it is important to treat everybody with dignity and respect as that can go a long way toward defusing a potentially violent situation.
