Starting Sunday through September, the Genesee Valley Park Indoor Ice Arena will be closed for renovations.
Phase One begins Sunday to improve the rink's ice slab. Untouched for about 40 years, the rink will undergo plumbing and electrical repairs. The rink's cement floors have made even the easiest repairs difficult. The new system will improve future repairs and make them cheaper.
Phase Two will update locker rooms, flooring and showers. The rink is home to a youth hockey team and other programs. They're hoping it will draw even more people to the rink.
"I think it's a great opportunity for the kids and their family to see that the city cares about them and want to see them have the best that there is to offer," said Genesee Valley Youth Hockey Program Director Florence Clemmons.
The total cost is expected to be about $1.2 million. Phase Two is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2014.
