Trial Date Set for Man and Woman Charged In Death of Fairport Teacher
A trial date has been set for a man and a woman accused of causing the death of a popular Fairport High School teacher.
Mark Scerbo, 23, and Megan Merkel, 24, are facing charges for driving recklessly and causing the death of Heather Boyum, 40, in July 2012.
Judge Douglas Randall set the trial date for May 6. There will be one trial, but two separate juries; one for Scerbo and one for Merkel.
Boyum was riding her bicycle along the shoulder on Route 250 in Penfield on the morning of July 29 when Scerbo allegedly struck her with the motorcycle he was driving. That threw Boyum onto the road and into the path of the car Merkel was driving, killing the mother of two.
Scerbo is facing three counts of aggravated vehicular homicide and other DWI charges.
Merkel is facing one count of vehicular manslaughter.
