Injured West Webster Firefighter Testifies in Washington
West Webster Firefighter Ted Scardino testified before Congress on Tuesday, urging lawmakers to get tough on illegal gun trafficking.
During his testimony, Scardino shared details about that day in December, when he and three other firefighters were ambushed by a gunman.
Scardino told the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force that William Spengler used guns he obtained illegally to shoot firefighters, killing two of them.
He said 38 rounds struck the fire truck he was hiding under, and then Spengler tried to set it on fire. Scardino said Spengler threw two bottles of gas at the truck and shot at the ground to try to ignite it.
Scardino spoke in support for the Gun Trafficking Prevention Act, a bill that would impose stronger penalties for so-called "straw purchasers;" people who buy guns for convicted felons who are prohibited from buying guns on their own.
Prosecutors say 24-year old Dawn Nguyen bought two guns for Spengler. She's facing felony charges for allegedly lying on the gun application.
