While many people are out enjoying this St. Patrick's Day weekend, police from across the area set up DWI check points to make sure everyone on the road is being safe.

At a checkpoint on West Ridge Road in Greece, police tell us they saw an increase in DWI arrests last year, however they say they've seen a decline in violent crashes as a result of drunk drivers. They say check points like these help encourage people to find designated drivers.

"The checkpoints have been very successful from deterring people from coming out on the holidays and consuming too much without getting a designated driver," said Sgt. Joseph Robinson of the Greece Police Department. "We've actually been seeing a lot of designated drivers out driving people around that have been consuming too much alcohol."

The Greece Police department says they were assisted with the check points by US Border Patrol and the Monroe County Probation Office.
