Seminar Held for Prospective School Board Members
The annual seminar for prospective Monroe County school board members was held at the Airport Holiday Inn Saturday morning.
The goal of the event is to educate people who are thinking of running for school board.
Those interested found out what the school board involves, what will be expected of them and the legal requirements necessary for running.
Organizers say many people don't understand that it is a volunteer position and they will be required to give hundreds of hours of their time without getting paid.
Jody Siegle, executive director of Monroe County School Boards, said, "We find that people don't always understand what the work of the school board really is. And it's much better if people understand that before they go through the effort of going through a campaign, getting elected and then going, 'oh my goodness this isn't what I though I was going to do.'"
Organizers stress one of the key concepts for prospective board members to take away is the importance of being a team player. Board members work together as a group; not as individuals.
