Friday marked the end-of-session ceremony for the New York Lorenzo de Zavala Youth Legislative program. It was a chance for 140 teens to learn about government and how it is run.

This session is one of 15 held across the U.S. and Panama this summer. More than 5,000 students will take part.

"They start to become friends, and especially now with Facebook and MySpace you really start building a constituency of thinkers, creative, positive, highly trained young people that would eventually become city council members and mayors and CEOs," said Julio Cotto, educational director.

"I've learned new ways of working with people. I've learned different cultures while I've been here. I've made so many new friends," said John Yates, New York City.

Yates says the program sparked his interest in politics, which he plans to pursue in the future.
