Federal stimulus dollars are heading to Rochester to help low-wage workers hit hard by downturns in the economy.

New York State's Labor Commissioner Patricia Smith was in Rochester Monday. Smith says it is time to get Rochester residents back to work.

Under a federal grant program, three organizations are in line to receive more than $510,000.

Monroe #1 BOCES will spend more than $147,000 to train 85 workers with GEDs.

Urban League of Rochester is slated to get $92,000 to train 60 people out of the juvenile justice program.

Ibero-American Action League is in line to receive more than $270,000 to train 126 people through a work readiness initiative.

"We have a moral obligation as citizens of the greatest state of the nation to make sure our lowest individuals don't fall through the cracks," said Smith.

The grants are designed to give emerging and transitional workers, with little or no connection to the workforce, the necessary skills in the work world and in life.
