Healthy Living: The Fraxel laser

By: Marcie Fraser

As you get older, how is your skin? Some of us are unlucky and we get acne. Get tired of using the lotions and creams, maybe it's time for the Fraxel. The Fraxel is a laser that resurfaces the skin, a fraction of skin at a time.

"The fractional laser produces a laser beam that is penetrating through the epidermis into the dermis, the deeper structure of the skin, to create the zones of remodeling. This can go fairly deep, it can go well into the midlevel of the dermis," said Dr. Arthur Falk.

The laser helps treat acne, acne scarring and rejuvenate the skin damage and fine lines.

"The Fraxel laser permeates the skin, making little zones and in their place, new collagen is formed," Falk said.

Forty-five minutes before the treatments, a numbing cream is used. Goggles protect the eyes from the laser. Laser settings are then selected.

"I am choosing the depth of penetration of my laser by adjusting the energy settings. I am going well beyond the epidermis into the deep collagen layers of the deeper dermis," Falk said.

And then, it's treatment time.

"We get underway, here we go. We do a series of passes. Eight each zone, we go back and forth. Is the first set and now we go back in a different direction. We get a nice even coverage. This is getting tiny spot as if you were aerating your lawn, seeding your lawn. The skin is the same idea," Falk said.

"It feels like tiny needles prickling my face, quickly," the patient said.

Most patients receive about four treatments, an hour per treatment. Down time is very little. She will have a little bit of redness and require a little bit of sunscreen.

The treatment costs vary, depending on how much of your face you have treated. Some people return for tune-ups with the next year.
