Hundreds of community members celebrated the Doctor Martin Luther King Junior National Day of Service Saturday with the Finger Lakes Regional Volunteer Center.

"King for a Day" united more than 300 students and community members across the City of Rochester with the message that everyone can make a difference by donating some of their time. Volunteers of all ages took part in different kinds of service and made this event the largest service day Rochester Cares has ever seen.

Food sorting, recycling, sorting medical supplies, and reading to kids were just some options. Students from Roberts Wesleyan College helped make over an old house.

Hema Autar, student at Roberts Wesleyan College said, "If you don't have a passion for this you're not going to love doing this job. And I said 'come on guys, this is for a good cause and we're turning an older house into a cafe and in the end you know you were a part of this.'"

The King Holiday and Service Act was passed by Congress in 1994 encouraging people to celebrate Doctor King's legacy with community service.
