Students at Greece Athena High School are learning far more than a textbook could ever teach them this school year; the students are learning about life and the hardships it can deal.
Athena senior Melody Simmons was diagnosed with leukemia at the start of the school year.
Her classmates are now raising awareness for a bone marrow drive in her honor.
Thursday, they held a rally in her honor where all seniors wore orange shirts – the color for leukemia awareness.
Simmons is now awaiting a bone marrow transplant, but first needs a donor.
The class will hold a donor registration event this weekend.
"She's a really good friend to a lot of people at this school. She was one of the nicest people at this school and we just try to support her because that's what important right now," said Samantha Fasciano, a senior.
"Bone marrow drives can really be quite successful and save people's lives, so we just want to either give melody a chance to find a donor and all the other people nationally," said Caitlin McCabe, a junior.
The bone marrow registry drive will be held this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the lobby of the Athena Performing Arts Center, 800 Long Pond Road.
