Le Roy Emergency Services mark the end of an era next month.
The town and village dispatch office closes on October 4 to consolidate with the Genesee County 911 Center.
For decades, Le Roy residents called 768-2527 for emergency services. Now, police ask residents to call 911.
Le Roy's police chief said the cost-saving measure means the layoffs of three full-time and six part-time dispatchers.
"Certainly, you don't want to see people lose their jobs, but unfortunately, in today's world, the economy the way it is, we're not any different," said Chris Hayward, Le Roy's police chief. "You're going to miss the people, certainly. These people have done a tremendous job for us. They've kept us safe, they kept the fire safe, and they got the ambulances where they needed to go."
"It's a very personal thing here," added James Sheflin, a Le Roy emergency dispatcher. "Most of the people who call here I know. I grew up here, and I feel bad for the people losing their jobs. It's not as unfortunate for me, though, as I'm still going through school. But the people who had this as a full time job, it's unfortunate."
Starting next month, Le Roy residents calling the 2527 number for emergency services will get an automated message asking them to call 911.
