Two people charged in a 1992 cold case murder appeared in Orleans County Court Monday.

Shaliq Reed and Joyce Powell are charged in the shooting death of John Rutledge.

Police said the incident happened 17 years ago off Sawyer Road in the town of Carlton, Orleans County.

Both pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder charges. The district attorney offered a plea deal to both defendants Monday.

"The plea that has been offered would permit them to plead guilty to murder in second degree. It could cap their sentencing at a minimum of 15 years to a maximum of life," Powell’s Attorney David Douglas said.

Currently, Reed is serving a sentence of 25-years-to-life and Powell is serving 16 years in prison in unrelated cases.

Both are due back in Orleans County court on March 11.
